<P>大方县位于贵州省西北部的乌蒙山区，隶属毕节地区，距贵阳200多公里。全县人口90万，除汉族外，还有彝、苗、白、仡佬、蒙古、布依、满等少数民族。全县面积3500多平方公里，辖10个镇、8个乡、18个民族乡，县府驻大方镇。农业主产玉米、油菜、马铃薯、水稻等，特产有生漆、皱椒、烤烟。区域经济落后，交通、通讯、能源等基础设施薄弱,农民生活非常贫困.
<P>猫场镇位于大方县西部，距县城51公里，公路路况很差。全镇总人口32000多人，其中苗、彝等少数民族占三分之二；耕地面积17000多亩，农业主产水稻、玉米、小麦、大豆、柑桔、花生等。去年上报全镇农业总产值4000多万元，实际仅2000余万元；上报农民人均纯收入1400元，实际仅600余元。走进猫场镇，触目所见，当地农民的生存状态令人忧虑。

<FONT color=#555555>2002年暑期，一个大四学生从千里之外的武汉来到这里搞社会调查，他走进了岩洞，给孩子们讲了许多大山之外的事情。
他的名字叫徐本禹，当时是华中农业大学农业经济专业的学生。
当暑期结束返校时，孩子们一直把他送到好几公里外。每个孩子都流下了眼泪。一个孩子仰着头问道：“ 大哥哥，你还要来吗？” 徐本禹噙着眼泪，点了点头。他没有告诉孩子们，他正在准备考研究生。
徐本禹以372分的优异成绩考取了研究生，他的导师是华中农业大学经济贸易学院院长王雅鹏教授。同时，他因为学业优秀获得6000元国家奖学金。但当天晚上，他彻夜未眠。猫场镇狗吊岩村孩子们的眼光一直在他脑海中闪现。
徐本禹出身在山东聊城一个贫困农民家里。他到华中农业大学上学时，甚至没有一件御寒的冬衣。是同寝室一个学生的母亲给了他一件夹衣。这是他第一次得到别人的温暖。今天回想起来，他说，是这件夹衣改变了他的价值观。当时他只有一个念头：别人帮助了我，我一定要帮助别人</FONT>

<FONT color=#333333>就在那个无法入眠的夜晚，徐本禹作出了一生中最重要的一个决定：回到猫场镇狗吊岩村帮助那些孩子。
当他把这个决定通过电话告诉父亲时，电话的那一端，父亲哭了。长久的啜泣之后，父亲用发颤的声音说：“全家尊重你的选择，孩子，你去吧，我们没有意见……” 当他把这个决定告诉学院领导时，大家沉默了，都不敢正视他的眼睛。
华中农业大学研究生处反复讨论，作出了一个决定：支持并为他保留两年的研究生学历。
他的事迹感动了许多人，也吸引了许多追随者。可是，狗吊岩村实在太穷太苦了。不仅物质文化生活极度贫乏，而且这里是一个封闭的信息孤岛，不通公路，不通电话，晚上靠油灯照明，连寄一封信也要走18公里崎岖的山路才能找到邮所。而文化背景的巨大差距造成的心理和话语障碍又使他们久久不能融入这个环境。追随他的志愿者一个一个地离去。
2004年4月，他回到母校华中农业大学做了一场报告。谁也没料到他在台上讲的第一句话是：“我很孤独，很寂寞，内心十分痛苦，有几次在深夜醒来，泪水打湿了枕头，我快坚持不住了……”本来以为会听到激昂的豪言壮语的学生们惊呆了，沉默了。许多人的眼泪夺眶而出。
报告会后，他又返回了狗吊岩村，每天沿着那崎岖的山路，去给孩子们上课</FONT>

<TD ><FONT color=#555555>徐本禹倍感孤独的背后，还有一段鲜为人知的隐情。作为义务支教的先行者，徐本禹的行为属于自发的“个人行为”，因此，他并没有被列入团中央的西部志愿者行动计划，只是一个“体制外”的志愿者。在我们这个“组织”决定一切的国家，这就意味着徐本禹得不到体制内西部志愿者的生活补助，成为一个完全没有生活来源的人。他的行动也不可能被主流媒体按“报道方针”进行宣传报道。换句话说，他很难得到社会的关注。这使他注定成为一个孤独的志愿者。
<P>幸亏共青团贵州省委、大方县委组织部、大方团县委和华中农业大学给了他援助和支持。贵州团省委后来将他补入本省志愿者名单，每个月发给他500元生活补助（列入团中央的每月800元），这才将他从衣食无着的困境者解脱出来。徐本禹每月节衣缩食，将这500元钱省出大半，用来资助山区的孩子上学。仅在猫场镇中学，他就资助了32位贫困学生。为了能与外界联系，他买了一部旧手机（爱立信T17）,但只用来发短信，从不拨打和接听电话。他付不起更多的手机资费
